In Burkina Faso, volunteer midwives receive crucial training that helps them to keep new mums and babies alive and well. This includes education in hygiene, pre and post natal care, HIV awareness and how to prevent transmission of the virus from mother to child.

Once the midwives are qualified, they receive a simple birthing kit that helps them to bring more babies into the world safely. This kit includes sterilised razor blades to cut the umbilical cord, gloves, bandages and soap to prevent infection. Simple gifts like this mean the difference between life and death for both mothers and new-born children.
